Thriller sound notes

Sound in thrillers

Diegetic sound – natural sound

Non-diegetic sound – un natural sound

Synchronous sound - sound which goes with action and events occurring in the scene.

Asynchronous sound – doesn’t go together or fit in with what’s happening in a scene (contradicts with events occurring)

Sinister/impending doom/ dramatic/Slow/sad/mimic heartbeat/out of tune instruments/high pitch/build tension and suspense/dreaming/whistle/echo/eerie/annoying/imagination/whimsical

What makes a good thriller soundtrack?

-It has to go with the style of the film eg: typical creepy film = typical creepy soundtrack

-conventional (builds tension eg: out of tune instruments)

-Crescendo (gets louder)

-High pitched

-Heartbeat sound (usually bass)

-Increasing speed volume

-Nursery rhyme = creepy

-No lyrics

-Creates a sense of enigma (mystery)
